A disc-shaped smoke detector, as shown on a ceiling in the picture, is now available. The detector, which emits a loud alarm when it “smells” smoke, is battery-powered, and is made specially for houses and flats. Retailing about SBO, the detector has a device which gives “bleeps” for 30 days
• when the battery is low. i The device, marketed by ; Wormaid International New Zealand, Ltd, has been i assessed by the United i States Bureau of Standards i as capable of saving more i than 40 per cent of lives ; lost in fires. The unit can detect fire i before smoke or heat can > be felt by humans.
