17 hurt by bombs

NZPA-Reuter Izmir (Turkey) The former Turkish Prime Minister, Mr Bulent Ecevit, escaped injury on Sunday when a small bomb exploded on his arrival at Izmir Airport on his campaign tour for the General Election next Sunday.

One of his aides suffered a slight leg wound, the police said. Later, bombs exploded at

an airport and at a railway station in Istanbul, injuring 17 people. Mr Ecevit’s aide, Mr Mehmet Isvan. brother of the Mayor of Istanbul (Mr Ahmet Isvan) was injured when what police said was ‘a small plastic charge exIploded as Mr Ecevit and his group walked from their ' nlane to a waiting car after i being greeted by a large crowd. A spokesman in Ankara for Mr Ecevit’s Opposition Republican People’s Party told NZPA-Reuter that the small size of the charge indicated that it was planted in an attempt to sow panic and was not a serious attempt on Mr Ecevit’s life.
