Sensitive plants

An Oddity of the plant world, the sensitive plant Mimosa, grows wild along hedge-rows and roadways throughout Fiji. It is so called because the leaflets fold up when touched or when blown by the wind. If you hold a lighted match near the top of one of the leaves you wall see the leaflets fold up in a very spectacular manner. Commencing at the top the leaflets close in pairs with great precision. When the stimulus reaches the base of the leaf stalk, the whole leaf will drop as if on a hinge. — E.V. CARLSON
