Case of inflation

For New Zealanders visiting Fiji, shopping can be exciting and amusing, particularly when travelling with a party. In the larger commercial areas, such as Suva and Nandi, there seem to be endless row's of shops all anxious to relieve you of your dollars. But then, it is fun trying to buy what you fancy at the best possible price because most sales are made after bargaining. It also pays to look around because prices vary so much. However, you can be too clever as one friend of

mine soon discovered. He succeeded in beating down a trader from $lO to $6 for a suitcase when one of his companions urged him to try somewhere else. He saw a similar case in another shop, but the price was firm at $lO. So he returned to the original store and, to his dismay, found that the price had also firmed to $lO. He realised he had lost that round and paid the price asked, only to be known by his friends as the man who paid $lO for a $6 suitcase. — H.J.G.
