E.C.T. treatment

Sir.—As a registered nurse working in an acute area of a psychiatric hospital it distresses me to see the correspondence on electro-convul-sive therapy. I am concerned because of the possible detrimental effect this bad publicity may have on people who have benefited from this treatment and on those who might benefit in the future. It is often a lifesaving procedure for the acutely suicidal patient. In the unit in which I work E.C.T. is used seldom, always with anaesthetic and always with the patient’s consent. Much of the criticism, particularly in correspondence columns appears to be ill-informed and could help to establish negative attitudes among people whose only contact with psychiatric illness and treatment is through the media.— Yours, etc., S. F. FARROW. Sunnyside Hospital. May 30, 1977.
