Trudeau party wins

NZPA Ottawa Candidates of the Liberal Party of the Canadian Prime Minister (Mr Pierre Trudeau) won five of six Federal parliamentary seats in by-elec-tions yesterday, increasing the party’s total in the House by one. Political observers said that the Liberals’ showing could lead Mr Trudeau to call for an early General Election this (northern) autumn. The Prime Minister had said during the campaign that his leadership would be open to question if the Liberals did badly in the by-elections.

After the results were known, Mr Trudeau told reporters at the Parliament Buildings he was pleased, but they should not be considered a forerunner of an early General Election. The last General Election was in 1974. Canadian elections are held within four years unless called earlier. Standings in the 264-seat House of Commons now are: Liberal 141, Conservative 95, New Democratic Party 16, Social Credit 11, Independent 1.

The Quebec separatist Parti Quebecois, which scored a surprising victory over the Liberals in the provincial elections last November, did not enter candidates for the Federal by-elections.
