University’s first win

University had its first win this winter, in the A grade table tennis competition with a relatively easy victory over a weakened Riccarton II team last evening. Kiccarton was without Stuart Armstrong and could only manage singles wins by .Michael namel and Guy Halliburton, and a doubles win by Halliburton and Graham Lamb.

Yee Chow Boi won his three singles matches comfortably and continues to impress with aggressive style. Richard Tan and Lee Hock Chong both had good nights, particularly Lee in his rather surprising 21-10, 21-10 win over Hamel. Avonside HI overpowered Avonside IV, 10-2. Both Graeme Main and Jan Morris won all their singles. Bruce Clark chimed in with wins over Glen Haszard and John Yang, while Avonside IV had its only singles success through Richard Dixon, who beat Clark, 21-17, 21-19. Riccarton I beat Selwyn, 7-4. The last doubles match was not played. The evergreen John Armstrong was beaten for the first time this winter, by Bill Scott, an extremely able player, 15-21, 17-21. This means that no player is unbeaten after six rounds. W’ayne Adamson took three games to dispose of both Scott and Neville Brightwell, but his younger brother, Stephen, was beaten by the same pair in two games. The first match this winter to be decided on games was the clash

between Avonside II and Dalling-I ton. Avonside won, 15 games to| 13, after the score had been 6-6: on matches played.
