Protest planned by ‘coalition’
About 30 organisations, mainly trade unions and pressure groups, have pledged support for a rally to be held in Cathedral Square on June 24. Representatives of the organisations decided to call themselves “Coalition for Peoples Rights” and at the rally will demand rights “to a living wage for a 40-hour week; decent social services for people of all ages; freedom from repressive legislation and discrimination; and control over their own environment.”
A spokesman for the coalition said that the idea stemmed from meetings of various groups to organise a protest demonstration against proposals to introduce charges on prescription drugs.. When that rally was cancelled, the organisations decided to hold a more general rally.
