Assault charge dropped
Charges of assault by a Japanese tuna boat skipper on a harbour pilot nave been dropped by the Lyttelton Harbour Board—but not without a flrm warning of prompt action should there be a repetition.
The board’s chairman (Mr J. Brand) said yesterday that the board took “a serious view” of an L - cident in which Captain J. F. E. Crawford was allegedly manhandled while trying to move the Takashima Maru No. 8 from the cattle jetty to another berth in port on Monday.
“Under section 251 of the Harbours Act it is an offence to obstruct a pilot In any way in the course of his duties.” Mr Brand said. “In view of the language difficulties, and as the master of the vessel has apologised for the incident, the board does not intend to take further action. “But the board will not tolerate any further such incidents and those involved, and vessel’s agents, have been so advised,” he said.
It is believed that the police have also dropped charges of common assault under the Crimes Act.
The vessel is expected to sail this morning.
