Socialism
Sir, — Labour’s acknowledgement Of its aim of democratic socialism takes a little digesting after so many years of protestation to the contrary. John A. Lee’s first open conflict with his colleagues resulted from publishing a book “Socialism in New Zealand” 40 years ago. Speaking on the eve of the 1938 election Mr Savage said: “Do not let the bogy of socialism deter you from voting Labour tomorrow.” Labour dropped the phrase “socialisation of the means of production, distribution and exchange” in 1951 and constantly fled from the word socialism. Now, when socialistic governments in free countries are in retreat, Mr Rowling leads his party in this very direction. The fear of a new socialistic society was a major factor in Labour’s defeat in 1975, — Yours, etc., J. F. GARVEY. Westport. May 23, 1977.
