Population increase estimated
I PA Wellington ; New Zealand’s total population for the year ended March 31, was 3,140,100. The Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris) said in Wellington that the population was estimated to have increased by 0.5 per cent, or 15,600 for the year. This compared with a growth of 34,000 for the year ended March 31, 1976, and an increase of 58.000 for the same period in 1975. In the quarter ended March
31 last, there was an estimated population decrease of 8000. This resulted from a natural increase (excess of births over deaths) of 8100 and a net migration loss of 16.000. In the quarter ended March 31, 1976, there was a corresponding decrease of 4200 while in the quarter ended March 31, 1975, there was an increase of 9800. The estimated mean population for the year ended March 31, 1977, was 3,120,600.
