HAMPTON LODGE STUD INVERCARGILL Announces the arrival in New Zealand of the excitingly-bred, wellperformed Thoreau ... a companion sire next season for Grey Gull, the only son of the -great Grey Sovereign standing in the South Island. The French-bred Thoreau will be the 12th sire to stand at Hampton Lodge, and the best-performed horse to do so. He won the equivalent of $54,000 in stakes, starting 13 times for two stakes wins, four seconds, two thirds and a fourth. He was selected by Sir Phillip Payne-Galway, of the British Bloodstock Agency, to whom he was recommended by the top French trainer Peter Head as "a very good horse to work with, and one with a fine turn of foot". A bay horse foaled in 1971 standing 16.3 hands, Thoreau is by Blandford's famous grandson Vai de Loir, the winner of seven races and $191,496, a French Derby winner, and leading French sire in 1973, 1974 and 1975. Tidra, dam of Thoreau, won the equivalent of $103,000, captured the classic Prix St Alary and was runner-up in the French Oaks. Tidra, whose Timeform rating was 123, is a daughter of Prince Taj, twice France's leading sire and a champion broodmare sire. Prince Taj, a member of the Prince Rose line, is a great grandson of the flying Mumtaz Mahal, the great grandam of Kurdistan. Tennyson, a full brother to Thoreau, was one of Europe's greatest performers of his time, winning $438,600. He was rated an unlucky second in the French Derby. Tidra is a half-sister to Bon Mot, a European champion winner of the Prix de I'Arc de Triomphe and $365,000. Grey Gull has had only three runners this season, but Dual has brought early honours to his sire record by winning twice from four starts, his most recent victory being at Riccarton last week. Winner of three races and placed in five others, Grey Gull has obvious appeal to those who recognise the immense influence of Grey Sovereign, his sons, and grandsons as sires of the likes cf Surround, Grey Way and dozens of other eminent performers. Grey Gull's dam, Baby Doll (by Dante) won two races from three starts. His grandam, Bebe Grande (by Nearco's half-brother Niccollo Dell Area) was the champion English two-year-old filly of her year, winner of eight races, 2nd in Two Thousand Guineas and 3rd in One Thousand Guineas.
