Former Post Office chief dead

PA Wellington The death occurred last week of Mr John George Young, a former DirectorGeneral of the Post Office and member of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Board in London. He was 90. Mr Young’s long career with the Post Office was highlighted by his organisation of the Post Office war rehabilitation scheme, which included national war savings, and the rationing of oil, fuel, tyres, foodstuffs, and clothing.

After joining the Post and Telegraph Department in Southland as a telegraph operator in 1902, Mr Young was soon promoted and transferred to Wellington, Napier, and Timaru. He became DirectorGeneral in 1939, a post he held for four years. In 1946, Mr Young received the C.B.E. and from 1947 to 1955 was stationed in London as the New Zealand member of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Board. Mr Young is survived by two daughters.
