Fahd talks crucial to peace hopes
NZPA-Reuter Washington! Crown Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia and President Carter are due to hold crucial talks today to assess the hopes of peace in the Middle East after Israel’s swing to the Right in its General Election. Crown Prince Fahd arrives fresh from summit talks in Riyadh between his brother. King Khalid, and leaders of Egypt and Syria, two of the so-called confrontation states which rely on Saudi Arabia’s vast oil wealth to finance the battle against Israel. After the Likud victory, Prince Fahd, King Khalid’s right-hand man, is expected to ask whether the United States can be sure the Israelis would meet the Arabs at a peace conference in
[Geneva or grant any concessions if they did. Many Middle East observers believe that assumption led Saudi Arabia to break with the majority of the 13member Organisation of Pet-’ roleum Exporting Countries in restricting its oil price increases to five per cent this year. This week-end the Lebanese newspaper, “AlAnwar,” quoted Prince Fahd as saying that Saudi Arabia was ready to raise its oil prices gradually to bring them into line with the O.P.E.C. majority by the end of this year. In Tripoli, Islamic Foreign Ministers have insisted that the Palestine Liberation Organisation must participate separately and on the basis iof equality in any Middle I East peace talks.
