Migration loss ‘alarming’

PA Wellington New Zealand’s record migration losses have reached ’alarming proportion," according to the Opposition spokesman on immigration (Mr T. J. Young). Mr Young was commenting on a Statistics Department release which showed that in the year to February, 1977 New Zealand suffered a record net loss from permanent and long-term migration of 17.124. “The statistics show that no fewer than 55,236 New Zealanders went overseas on a permanent or long-term basis. Never before have so many in one year packed their bags and left to live in other countries.

“It represents a huge vote of no-confidence in the Government,” he said. “We now have the ludicrous situation whereby the Minister of Immigration (Mr Gill) has had to do an about-face on his policy, and go to Britain to drum up some migrants to replace the thousands of departing New Zealanders. “I am extremely concerned that when the Australian economy recovers, more New Zealanders will depart, and those who have already left will not return. “The implications of this loss for the future of our social welfare system, and the growth of our economy, are very serious indeed."
