End to Garden City golf?

A celebrity golf classic will be held this year to replace the Garden City Classic, and the professional tournament may not be held in Christchurch againThere will be only one professional tournament in the South Island this year — in Dunedin — but the annual meeting of the Garden City Classic committee last evening decided it could not lie idle. A proposal to promote a celebrity tournament for amateurs with 400 starters was adopted and the retiring chairman (Mr I. H. Bennett) said the tournament should produce a greater return for effort. The professional tournaments over the last eight

years had produced a return of about 25 per cent on a budget of about $40,000. An amateur tournament could produce a return of 80 or 90 per cent on a budget of about $12,000. Mr Bennett said . this would be much more rewarding for the committee. He objected to working hard for several months for charity and in the end see much of the money finish in the pockets of professional golfers.

The celebrity tournament will be played at Harewood on November 17 and 18 over 36 holes and the committee will cater for up to 400 entries. Harewood was chosen for the venue because it is the only club in Christchurch with two 18-hole courses.

i It is intended to have each i hole sponsored for $lOO and i players will pay probably I $2O to enter. 1 In his annual report Mr : Bennett said the profit from the Airlines Tournament > which replaced the city clas- ■ sic last year was not as . good as expected. It was I $4OOB — the committee was . hoping for $7OOO. i He said there had been i “many hassles” with the Airlines Classic and this included the classic committee : being prevented from apI preaching the usual sponsors ■ for support. ( Three charities which benefited from last year’s i tournament were presented ; with cheques at the meeting. The Association of Canteri bury Playcentres and the Y.W.C.A. each received

$1704 and Foundation 41, a national Round Tables project, received $lOOO.
