N.Z. MARKET WEAKENS

In spite of a marginal rise in the N.Z.U.C. index, the New Zealand sharemarket weakened in quiet trading yesterday. Falls outnumbered rises by nearly two to one. The biggest fall was a 50c slump by Tasman after its grim profit result more than a week ago, and Challenge eased 4c after the directors revised its expected yearly profit. National Insurance rose a further 5c on its share split and cash issue, while N.Z. Insurance also firmed. Meat companies were firmer, transporters and timber companies mixed, and stock and station agents, vehicle companies and property developers were easier.
