Orchestra grant partly withheld

The Canterbury Orchestra Trust will have to make “constructive efforts” to unite with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra if it wants to receive a full $16,500 City Council grant this year.

That was a 10-8 council decision last evening on a motion by Cr Neville Hattaway. Tbe trust will be given $lO,OOO. The remaining $6500 will be withheld for six months to see if the parties try to get together. One Canterbury Orchestra Trust trustee — the Mayor (Mr Hamish Hay) abstained from voting. But opponents of the move to unite the orchestras said it would never work. “There is a measure of

financial blackmail in this,” said Cr David Caygill. “These are two bodies that obviously don’t get on with each other.” “It is unfortunate to have the continuing division,” Cr Hattaway said. “The council should work to bring the parties together.” Critics of the move said the issues were too complicated to be dealt with at the council table. “This is an annual spasm that we go through,” Cr Caygill said. “I oppose this method of interfering with cultural bodies of this city.” Total council grants to welfare, recreational and cultural groups increased from $79,000 last year to almost $130,000.
