Ship search turns up wrong man

PA Auckland An extensive police search for two escaped prisoners believed to be stowing away in a ship that berthed at Auckland yesterday proved both a success and a failure. A stowaway was found — but he was not one of the men sought by the police. One of four men who escaped from an Australian prison was found last week in a seaman’s cabin of the cargo ship Union Hobart He was found three minutes before the ship was to sail for Auckland, and the Melbourne police asked their Auck-

land counterparts to search the vessel w hen she berthed. Detective Inspector L. D. Sinton led 35 policemen, two police dogs, and 11 Customs Department officers in an extensive search of the Union Hobart. The party boarded the vessel in the stream of Waitemata Harbour about 4 p.m., and finished the search four hours later. Mr Sinton said that the stowaway found in the ship was an Aucklander, aged 23, who had stowed away at Melbourne. Wharf police were questioning the man late last evening.
