The Mayors Cup for greyhound puppies lias been notable for itsshare of upsets in recent years and the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s feature race at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday afternoon was no exception. The Ohoka trained Vane Mistress emerged triumphant over several promising youngsters after racing handily throughout, and coming away in the home straight. Vane Mistress, raced by Sue Colder, who has had much success with Miss Trayos and Moselle Moon, is by the Irish sire, Bally Kilty and from the open bitch, Moon Girl. She will complete her engagements in puppy' class before embarking on an Australian campaign in Melbourne. Dashing Wave was quickly into tlie lead, with Vane Mistress trailing. Heart of Hope, the favourite after her great heat win, ranged alongside Vane Mistress after veering wide from the jump. Vane Mistress took the measure of Dashing Wave early in the run home and ran on stronglv to win by more than one length. Heart of Hope battled into third behind Dashing Wave. Highsted Lass pushed back in the early running, finished resolutely for fourth, ahead of Eileen McManus. The track record over 590 m was improved on for the third time in less than two months when the powerful front runner, Man-O-War, held off another talented chaser, Bright Byrne—the second place getter in this year’s New’ Zealand Breeders’ Stakes—in the D.
