Well-known bandsman dead
PA Wellington A former director of music in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and bandmaster of the R.N.Z.A.F, during World War 11, Mr H. Gladstone Hill, of Wellington, died on Tuesday. He was 96. Mr Hill, who arrived from Britain in 1886, was a former secretary of the Auckland Dairy Factory Managers’ Association from 1899, and was also president and chairman of the New Zealand Patriotic Society during World War I. He made music his profession after the war, becoming bandmaster of the 16th Waikato Regimental Band and touring Britain, the United States, and Canada, with the Australian Commonwealth Band from 1925 to 1927. He was conductor of Derry’s Military Band in Christchurch for six years. He was bandmaster and director of music for the R.N.Z.A.F. from June, 1940. He was awarded the M.B.E. in 1961 for services to music.
