New H.S. for Kaikoura
Work on a new high school at Kaikoura would be started as soon as possible, said the Minister of Education (Mr Gandar) in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Gandar was making his annual good-will visit to the Canterbury Education Board. He spent about two hours having informal discussions with the board before lunching with members. At a press conference later, Mr Gandar said that the Kaikoura high school project was ready’ to go to tender; a recommendation for final approval had been made by the Cabinet works committee. There was no doubt that’
the school had to be built, the earlier the better, he said. Contract drawings have been completed. The board had expected that work would start last month. Primary and secondary school buildings are at present on the same site. When the secondary school moves to its new site the primary school will take over those buildings. They will then be remodelled. Mr Gandar said it was too early yet to indicate if allocation of grants to schools would be increased next year. A case could be made for increases where they were thought necessary.
