Approval for subdivision
The 61 ha subdivisionl adjacent to Oaklands has! been approved by the Paoa-i rua County Council, but it !has reserved its decision over: [the proposed 2j ha laker (which is planned for the re-: I (serve area. Merrit Beazley Homes. Ltd. ,< and the Vanderley Family .Trust sought consent last, week to a conditional use in j the general development Ai zone, to develop the area! with private houses, apart-j ment houses, recreational reserves, a commercial area, a' secondary school, and an intermediate school. The concept of the lake caused the committee some: concern. The chairman (Mr A. Y. Shuker) said that he was worried about the safety of small children. In its recommendation to; jthe council last evening, the; committee said that ini general the proposal met the: spirit and intent of the general development A zone, and was prepared to grant conditional approval. It noted, however, that, although the lake could be a: possible hazard, it acknow-! ledged that it did have considerable potential as a com-! munity asset, and could add; variety and character to. what might otherwise be a| stereotyped and not very! interesting residential suburb. l Approval for the lake has; therefore been given in principle, and final approval
will be given if, and when •the developer provides plan: ' which convince the counci (that the reserve can be de veloped so that danger fron i drowning is reduced to t (minimum, and the technica (problems overcome. Cr Shuker told the coun ci] that when the developers plans were made available !the full council would haw | the chance to discuss them : “There’s no way that oui committee will accept soi< responsibility for the fina decision on such an impor tant matter as this.” he said
