Cable job to cost up to $7M
PA Wellington Repair work on a faulty Cook Strait cable —estimated to cost bety.'een S6M and S7M — is expected to begin soon. The cable-laying ship Photinia arrives at Wellington on Sunday. The cable broke down in iAugust, and the Electricity ! Department switched to a I spare cable. If a fault I occurred in one of the two i Strait cables now in service, power to the North Island I would be cut drastically.
I The 10.000 tonne bulkcargo ship Photinia laid the three Cook Strait cables in 1964. She has six large holds. ;and it is ideally suited to handling the oil-impregnated, i steel-armoured, gas-filled cable.
The job is expected to take about two months.
