Lateryl finishes best

Latryl improved on his first-day third when he ran down the favourite, Roseama, close to home in the Flying Sportsman Handicap, first! leg of the on-course treble at Westport yesterday. Lateryl trailed fourth until the turn, and when Brent Lee asked her for a final effort she responded gamely toi take the decision bv a neck! from Roseama, with Motoway | running on for third fouri lengths back.

Roseama, as on Saturday,! was tailed off early but she' mounted a big run from the! 800 m and reached the lead! shortly before turning for! home. She appeared to be. travelling easily in front but! could not withstand Lateryl’s fiirshing burst. Motoway ran on from midfield but never looked like! catching the first two.! Adriatic had the run of the race but could not take ad-1 vantage of it over the final! 300 m and faded, finishing l fourth.

Grand Poppa gave the North Island its second win at the meeting when she convincingly beat the juveniles in the Shamrock Supporters Handicap, second leg of the treble.

With the withdrawal of Sean’s Gift, which won the corresponding race on Saturday, Grand Poppa was installed a warm favourite and i never gave his supporters any fears.

He made all the pace and ran on too well in the heavy] conditions for Greek Magic,l which had narrowly beaten! I him for second on Saturday. Greek Magic was under [pressure over the last 200 m but held out Battisma by a i length for second. taller looked to hhve the i measure of Our Jet when the latter slipped on the turn but once she regained her balance sb- had too much in reserve and beat Affentaller by three lengths. Shuoton, one of the littlefancied runners, ran on well for her third placing, while the remainder were led in by the first-day maiden winner, Count Fable.
