Arts gift tax cut wanted
| The Queen Elizabeth II {Arts Council has asked the {Government to raise the {level of personal tax exlemption for individuals giving to cultural, charitable, or philanthropic causes. The chairman of the council (Mr Hamish Keith) said that the personal tax exemption was set at $2OO in 1972. “The council wishes to see this raised to $lOOO with $BOO being claimed for charitable or cultural donations,” Mr Keith said. “The remainling $2OO may be claimed on I school fees. “While recognising that the main responsibility for funding the arts lies with the Government the council 1 realises that, at present, the {Government may not be able to fully meet this comImitment,” he said. i Mr Keith also said that a {mixture of Government and {private funding was, in the {council’s opinion, one of the {best ways to develop and maintain artistic growth in {New Zealand.
