N.Z. prices up

Pepper prices are also increasing rapidly in New Zealand. This is particularly noticeable since the lifting of the price freeze. An order of black pepper placed this week by New Zealand Coffee and Spice Limited will cost $1.23 a lb to land. A year ago it cost 82c a lb. The stronger white pepper, which is most popular here is more expensive, by about 22c a lb. A 500 g container of white pepper retails for about 32c.

Supply is also a problem. The company would normally expect a ship a month from Singapore, making arrival date of the raw material about six weeks from ordering. A spokesman said last week that now they are “lucky to see a ship from Singapore every two months.” It now has to buy larger quantities.
