‘Brilliant, great’ Gadaffi settles Philippines fight
NZPA-Reuter Manila' The Philippines Government and! Moslem separatists have reached tentative agreement on a plan for settling the Moslem rebellion in the southern Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos said yesterday.
He said that the Libyan leader (Colonel Muammar Gadaffi) had intervened and submitted a proposal which was acceptable to both sides. Talks in Libya between the Government and the! rebel Moro National Liberation Front, .which has been fighting for an autonomous state in the southern Philippines, had been deadlocked since the beginning of the month. “I would like to announce that by virtue of the generous intervention of the brilliant and great leader of Libya we have come to a tentative‘solution, a peaceful settlement of the Mindanao conflict,” President Marcos
said at a military ceremony. Mrs Imeda Marcos, the President’s wife, left Tripoli yesterday for home after spending TOdays in the Libyan capital as her husband’s : envoy to get the talks going ; again. i Officials said that her discussions “ with , Colonel Gadaffi, who has been acting as a mediator between the sides, had been difficult. According to President ! Marcos, Colonel Gadaffi (made his settlement proposal “because of the intervention of the first lady and because of his desire that there now be peace in a friendly country like the Philippines.”
