Rare fish caught
iPA New Plymouth ; A rare fish, only eight ; specimens of which have so far been recorded in New 'Zealand, has been caught by [the New Plymouth power station cooling water system. It was a globe fish, Spheroides nitidus, a relation of the puffer fish. The remains of the fish will be sent to the Dominion Museum, Wellington. The fish was sucked into the station’s water intake system and was trapped on a screen designed to prevent material from getting into | the condensers. [ The fish is so rare that | little is known about it. It is ' regarded as a poor swimmer which drifts with ocean currents. The species is 35cm long and varies in colour from silver-blue to off-white. Ils gill slits are incorporated in the upper part of the pectoral fins and are hard to see. Staff at the station thought they had caught an unusual mammal when they discovered the fish.
