Timor investigation
NZPA Washington The United States House of Representatives international relations subcommittee will hold hearings from March 23 on allegations by Australian Parliamentarians about Indonesian atrocities in East Timor. The hearings are the result of a petition sent to President Carter by 53 Australian Parliamentar-
lans, and other information. The hearing will investigate charges that Indonesia, a big recipient of American aid, committed “massive atrocities” in East Timor, and charges that American military equipment was used illegally by the Indonesians. The State Department has reacted cautiously to the allegations from Australia. however.
“We have pointed out that we believe the reports of atrocities hate been greatly exaggerated,” said an official. “However, we know very little — that appears to be the basic problem.” Linder United States law. a country is prohibited from using American equipment secured under the military sales programme for operations not based on legitimate self-defence.
