into the final day with a I two-point lead over the Wel-i ilington team, thumped [Monowai (Canterbury) 7-0 to; take the Dustin Cup title. The vital ingredient in the' Auckland team’s success was the pitcher, Cheryl Kemp —i I the Kevin Herlihy of women’s softball, kemp’s ■variation and movement of the bail befuddled even the best batting sides and. ! against Monowai, she scored 13 strike outs for a single isafe hit. The other invaluable mem- : her of the side was the shortstop, Sharmaine Inder, whose throws across the ; diamond earned her the nick-name of ‘'rocket-arm.'’ Broadway erased the memories of Friday’s 7-1 loss to United by finishing ■ with a 6-1 win over Partco Saints (Hutt Valley). Debbie Chapman (2) and, Louise Paterson (2) were Broadway’s top batters, and 1 Naomi Shaw scored two for Saints. Irene Keating performed well in holding Saints to ’ three hits. Broadway's win gave it; second place, with Monowai third. Napier Marist fourth; and Saints fifth. Nelson Rebels beat Ellis! Park lOtaaol 8-3 in the
Emma Bright final and: earned promotion to the! Dustin Cup next year. Northcote (North Shore) 1 finished bottom in the Dustin Cup and, depending on! entries, seems likely to be] relegated at- next season’s tournament. '
