New squash title to Hayes
The 1977 squash rackets tournament season got off to an excellent start at the week-end with the Sockburn Park Recreation Centre’s open tournament, won by Rod Hayes. Although few outside entries were received, the tournament was well supported by leading Canterbury players and proved a worthwhile addition to the local tournament scene.
Rod Hayes took the Enterprise Homes Division One title with a sparkling, fourgame win over Lin Sparks. Although Hayes looked a winner throughout, he was perhaps fortunate that Sparks was jaded from a day spent fielding in the inter services cricket tournament.
Hayes showed great control on his length shots, opening the way for his fine drop shots into the nick with which he finished off many rallies. Sparks volleyed crisply, but seldom with enough accuracy to force Hayes on to the defensive.
Ros Stanton added this new title to a long list of tournaments won in the South Island, but not without encountering a strong
fight in the final by the Canterbury selector, Kathy Graham.
Mrs Graham played soundly in the first game, which she won. She drove firmly to the back-court and finshed off many rallies with excellent short drives. As the match went on, however, her length began to fall away and Miss Stanton was given many opportunities to hit winners from mid-court. In the men’s division 11, there was an excellent final between two young players, Gary Monk and Robin Clements. Monk proved the steadier, winning 9-7 in the fifth game of an hour-long battle.
