The Central New Brighton School’s new community ball was officially opened yesterday by the chairman of the school committee, Mr R. Stokes. The photograph shows Mr Stokes, speaking at the opening of the hall. More than 200 people attended the opening ceremony which was chaired by Mr P. Dunbar. The school committee
has raised more than $BO,OOO to build the 930 sq. m hall which incorporates badminton and basketball courts. An application will be made to the Government for a subsidy for the completion of planned extensions to the hall which it is hoped will be finished by the end of the year.
Under the provisions of the Government subsidy the hall must be open to the community for at least 30 hours a week, however, the committee secretary' (Mr J. Dwyer) said that the hail would be open to the public for much longer than that. “If groups approach us for use of the hall, we will certainly try’ to fit them in,” he said.
