Entries, takings up at Cheviot show

Tne upgrading and extending of ano*-ground taciiities paid off veil when the Cheviot Agrtcui* turaj and Pastoral Association held ita annual show on Saturd*>-

the show progianime drew a record 3772 entries, and this was, reflected m greater public interest, for gate takings rose from' S6V4 tast year to 3841.80. Much of the credit tor this >ears result goes to the association's industrious president. I Miss Kathleen Rutherford, who as well as performing administrative work fielded entries in several &ections. It was a notable day tor her.' particularly in the sheep section.! where after the judging of the individual breeds, her champion Romney ram was selected as the ail-breeds champion by a panel I of judges. With 384 entries, the sheep section was almost double that of■ last '■ear. This was helped byi much better support from within the district, although in the studi sections exhibitors had often travelled long distances. Cattle classes showed a revivalj with 29 entries, comoared with IS last sear. The association’s* decision to provide cattle pens,providing for the exhibition of J unled beasts, must inevitably! make for more competition.. Under normal farming conditions > few breeders have time to pre-; parr cattle for led classes. The ring etents, as usual, drew strong support Mr S. M. Wood,, of Rangiora. who judged the hacks over 15.3 hands, considered ♦he top six in the various; classes would have won anywhere. There was great depth to the classes. Mr Wood found that in;

selecting his winners he had to look for faults rather than good points. The standard of riding, too.' was much better, but there was room for better presentation, and riding was vital in achieving this. Among the static exhibits, the wool section received particular mention. The judge. Mr J. Devine, of Christchurch, said it was the best entry he had seen at a country show. and that twoof the entries would be far from disgraced at a metropolitan show. Mr Devine congratulated the association and exhibitors for the way the wool had been presented.

Tlie ehampion fleece came from] D. A. Sloss. A Corriedale ram ! fleece, it was described as a typical sire’s fleece — nicely;: locked, and soft handling. This year's shearing competi-| tions were held in a new three- , stand paviUton. and they drew j stead'- Interest throughout thei, day. A Cox. of Timaru. won the* open event for the fourth year' running, while G. Lyon won the

intermediate. special district awards were won by A. Wilkinson. G. Hide, and B. PofT. Tlie organisers are planning to add another shearing event at next year’s show.
