Chandler takes T.Q. honours
It was a good evening fori Norrie Chandler at the Templeton Pall Mall Speedway on Saturday.
Chandler (Triumph 650) won all three T.Q. events by fairly comfortable margins. Starting from tiie rear of the field in the Hornby Auto Services handicap. Chandler won easily from Chris arid Bruce Hobbs, both also on Triumph 6505. The Hobbs Brothers scratch event saw a close battle for the minor places between Wayne Denovan and Bruce Hobbs, and Hobbs won narrowly. Again, Chandler had built up a big lead in the middle laps, and the result was never in doubt after that. In the third T.Q. race the Geoff Stone Motors feature, Denovan and Bruce Hobbs changed cars and became locked in an exciting tussle for the minor places with Chris Hobbs. On the last lap, however, Chris Hobbs pulled out and Denovan opened up a gap from Bruce Hobbs to make the final result clear-cut. Allan Palmer (Cesco) w on two of tiie midget events, while Mark Williams (Chevy 2) picked up the Philips Mower Service handicap. Tiie most brilliant piece of riding on tiie night came in the GoCola Flying Four when Roger Wright kept Graeme Stapleton behind him in a skilful display of riding. Wright led from the first corner with Stapleton right on his heels. At almost every bend, Stapleton tried to find the inside gai> which was not there. Wright shut out any gaps which did appear and at the final bend, Stapletoil went wide on tiie track but just failed to head Wright, who thoroughly deserved the victory. In spite of only two pairs’ contesting the last two sidecar events, Bruce and Wayne Turner (700 cu. cm Rickman) set a new record for three laps with 66.25 cc in tiie final scratch event. lan Begbie and Tony Henry, also on a 700 cu. cm Rickman, pushed them all the way in each race.
Mike Allan (Chev) won both the Ferry Road Rub-a-Dub scratch and the Champion feature for super modifieds, showing good form in both. Norrie Chandler was chosen Mutual Travel “Sportsman of the night.”
