New fiction

The Auctioneer. By Joan Samson. Hodder and Stoughton. 239 pp. $9.45.

To a small country town in New England comes the stimulation of a go-getting businessman who proceeds to hold weekly auctions to increase the police force of one. Whilst the families enjoy clearing up musty attics and receiving small cheques in return, their voluntary contributions gradually become fees to avoid accidents to their property and families. The auctioneer’s increasing control of the whole life of the community brings with it the horrors of living with an all-pervading fear or leaving farms occupied for generations.

Joan Samson understands the jealousies and strains in a small town, and the capita) that can be made from them by an evil charmer. Her book is a gripping analysis of enveloping power.
