Breath test threat
Random breath tests, introduced in Victoria last year amid controversy, could be extended throughout Australia, according to the Federal Transport Minister (Mr Nixon). He said that he found the rationale behind the legislation “very convincing” and that testing drivers at random had a strong deterrent effect. Without it, those who had been drinking were aware that unless they had a crash or drove erratically they were unlikely to be detected, he said.
