New bridge ready
The Durham Street bridge over the Avon River near the Bridge of Remembrance will be open to traffic tomorrow morning.
The Christchurch City! Council’s traffic engineer (Mr; M. Gadd) said yesterday that for a period tomorrow it might be necessary to divert south-bound traffic ' from Cambridge Terrace across the Hereford Street bridge and along Oxford Terrace to speed up completion of [necessary approach work to the new bridge. With the opening of the new bridge. Oxford Terrace between Lichfield and Cashel Streets will be closed to
traffic, and Durham Street! between Lichfield and Cashel! Streets will become a two-; way street. Mr Gadd said that the only restriction on traffic would be that from the Cashel Street-Oxford Terrace intersection only buses and taxis would be allowed to enter Durham Street. The area will be well sign-i posted for motorists early l next week, and traffic offi-| cers will help if required. , Motorists travelling south: are urged to get on to Cam-1 bridge Terrace as soon as [possible, and not wait until [the last opportunity at Here-j I ford Street.
[ By drawing more traffic into Cambridge Terrace it is- ■ hoped to reduce the trafficflow in Oxford Terrace. The new bridge has taken one year to build, and has' cost $170,000. although this' figure does not include rhe last of the roadworks. The Bridge of Remem- [ brance will be landscaped so (that it will become what it 'was first intended to be — a [memorial, and not simply a I traffic bridge. [ The Durham Street bridge, lover the railway lines near! ; [ Moorhouse Avenue was not ■ [ expected to be ready for use; I until early next month. Mr; Gadd said. 1
