Onny Parun, of New Zealand, was beaten in second round play in the Rancho Mirage tennis tournament by the Australian No. 3 Davis Cup team member, Phil Dent. Dent won the match. 6-3, 6-4. Another Australian Davis Cup player, Ray Ruffels, lost 4-6, 2-6 to Bill Scanlon (U.S.).
