Richard Compton, the 20- ! year-old son of the great English batsman, Denis 'Compton, arrived in the city earlier this month. He has ! lived in South Africa since the a°e of six. and has played cricket at club and university level. “My first priority is to enrol'at the University of Canterbury, where I will .study for a B.A. degree in i journalism. If it is possible to have my visa extended, then I expect to be in ; Christchurch for the next ‘three years.” Compton said. [He plans a career in television journalism. Once’ he has made his university arrangements, Compton intends to join a cricket club in the city. Denis Compton represented England in 78 tests, iaveraging 50.06 an innings [from his 5807 runs. Two of i his 17 test centuries were ■ made at New Zealand's expense, at Leeds and Lords in 11949.
