"Quick queue” at T.A.B.?
Sir, — I have repeatedly tried at several branches of the Totalisator Agency Board for an immediate bet and have been turned down on every occasion, yet there have been queues of people placing bets on races many hours away- By the time one reaches the window, the time for placing the bet on an earlier race has elapsed. Surely it would be possible to have one window for immediate bets when there are queues at other windows. I do not want the excuse of “cost for extra staff.” The board makes enormous profits. I have no complaints about the operators at the windows. I have always found them courteous. One agency manager was downright rude to me when I suggested a quick queue. He said he could not care less if I complained. Is it for some obscure reason the board's policy not to encourage better facilities for their providers? —Yours, etc., L. CLARK. February’ 3, 1977.
[The Secretary of the Totalisator Agency Board replies: “The board has carried out trials in the past using one or more ‘fast service’ windows. It was found that betters still made use of such windows for placing a large number of bets, thus defeating the object of the trials. The supervision of such windows to ensure that betters do not exceed the quota of bets allowed is extremely difficult. Experiments have shown that the most efficient service is given by providing all facilities at all windows.”]
