Tourist flights to Antarctica
Air New Zealand executives who decided to match the Qantas gimmick of tourist flights to Antarctica must be well pleased with the outcome of their first two flights. Two full flights provided more than 400 passengers with “ the experience of a lifetime ”, as the flights were described by more than one passenger. There was, apparently, not a hitch in the arrangements for either flight, and on both days the passengers all got good views of the unique scenery of the southern con-
tinent. Air New Zealand will certainly hope to repeat the flights next summer. The more trips the airline makes to Antarctica, the greater is the chance that a group will find the views of the continent obscured by cloud or storm. Intending passengers should be aware of the high probability of cloud over much of the continent at any time of the year. The airline and its agents should emphasise this risk when accepting bookings; they might even consider offering disappointed passengers a second flight at a reduced fare.
