W onder scoops Grammies
Hollywood Stevie Wonder carried off four awards, including best album of the year, in the 1977 Grammy Awards, announced last week-end. Chicago, who have been nominated 19 times, took three awards for the album “Chicago 10.” The best pop female vocal award was won by 30-year-old Linda Ronstadt and ex-Beach Boy Bruce Johnston won the song of the year award for his hit ‘T Write the Song.” Wonder is no stranger to the world of awards. He has previously picked up Grammies for his albums "Innervisions” and “Fulfillingness — First Finale." He has been honoured in every award ceremony in recent years. This time he walked off with awards for best album. "Songs in the Key
of Life,” best producer, best male vocalist and best rhythm and blues performance. The best record of the year went to “This Masquerade," by George Benson, who also won insutrumental and rhythm and blues performance awards.
Natalie Cole, daughter of the late Nat King Cole, won the best rhythm and blues performance for “Sophisticated Lady.” The Starland Vocal Band won the award for best new artists of the year and Ella Fitzgerald had the best vocal performance in “Fitzgerald Pass Again.” The combination of Marilyn McCoo and BilDavis junior on “You Don’t have to be a Star” was named best rhythm and blues vocal performance by a duo or group.
Arthur Rubenstein won the classical album of the year award for “Beethoven: The Five Piano Concertos.” Best country instrumental performance award went to Chet Atkins and Les Paul for “Chester Lester.” Emmylou Harris won the best country female vocal performance for “Elite Hotel” and the male category Rodney Milsap was named for “I am a Stand by my Woman Man.”
Count Basie won the best jazz performance by a soloist award for “Basie and Zoot.” The best jazz performance by a big band award was taken by the Duke Ellington group for “The Ellington Suites.”
