Reid adds to medal haul

(By Ray Cairns) Kim Reid, as dominant a Junior this season as he was , | last, increased lus haul of gold I medals to the maximum of five I when the Canterbury hard-track ’ cycling championships went to [their belated conclusion last J evening. ! Before last evening’s sixth and (final session at Denton Park — I it included the events rained off I on Sunday — Reid had already I won the junior sprint and 3000 m ! individual pursuit, and been fastest junior in the kilometre ; I time trial. | He went a step further In the ! open 4000 m team pursuit when I the all-junior Papanui B team : won the final by 6sec from the I Papanui A and senior team. The event was more than a little contentious, as in its ride-over I semi-final against Timaru. ; Papanui A fielded a team [ including the reserve, Gary [Sword, and without Blair Stock- ; well, who was late arriving. | Stockwell tried to start in the I final but as it was in the same I session as the semi-final and I substitutes are prevented by article 22 of the rules, Sword had to take his place. 1 A rather ungracious Stockwell I subsequently left the meeting without contesting the Io.OOOm championship. But that event, normally the hlgh-spot of the championship meeting, was the most disappointing for years, if

not ever, anyway. Only seven started, and the ; race had an almost comical conclusion when, after a Chris Hogan attack, Paul Jesson and Lin Sword slipped clear with 1200 m to ride. I Hogan refused to chase, and,; so did the four sprinters left, : and Jesson went on to get over Sword in the straight. But the finale was still to come; as the junior 8000 m champion- I ship had been given top billing, and it too appeared to be geared for a break-away win. Witli less than three laps to ride, Bruce Brunton and Paul .Avis got 30 or 40 metres clear, i and no-one was very keen to chase. Coming into the bell, Greg Cumming shot clear, but Reid would have none of that. Even though he had Phillip , Taylor, particularly, and the rest of the field in general, on his wheel, Reid led out, and no-one could match his finish. Kevin ; Basher came closest, and Tony!; Strang was a fast-finishing third. But to a very great degree, the show was stolen by the national novice road champion, Shane Smith. He not only beat his opponent.; this season, Andrew Hollaway, in ] the 1600 m individual pursuit for. the Tino Tabak Cup, but broke the provincial record into the bargain. Smith’s time was 2rr.in s."sec, which broke Joe Sullivan’s six-1 year-old record by nearly a'

second, and bls punishing final lav was too much for HoUsway. The latter still did a very good 2mln 7.4 sec in the very cold and windy conditions ana in any other year that would have been a winning ride. Earlier, the same two had combined with Brent Kircher and Murray Steele to win easily the novice Italian pursuit championship, giving Steele his third gold medal. The other novice championship decided, the junior 1600 m. resulted in Vaughan Harvey reversing the 4'JOm result bl over- | powering Steve Woods in the straight. Bevan Gyde again won the bronze medal.
