Escorts for nurses
Orderlies had been escorting nurses to Christchurch Hospital car-parks late at night for several . years under a scheme arranged by the North Canterbury Hospital Board, the chief executive of the board (Mr J. G. Laurenson) said yesterday. He was responding to comments made by a hospi- i tai charge orderly in “The i Press” on Wednesday. The [orderly said that the nurses I were asking for protection 1
from orderlies because they were not getting it from the hospital board. The nurses
were nervous about going to hospital car-parks by themselves late at night, the orderly said. Mr Laurenson said that the two car-parks had been floodlit for several years, and because the nurses had been apprehensive about walking alone to the carparks after late duty an arrangement had been made that orderlies would accompany them on request from the nurse.
However, until recently nurses had not made much use of the service.
