Breeding ewes and store lambs easier but sheep holding

Neus of a weaker market for amb in the United Kingdom, and 1 fall in wool prices, drew an in-i hitable reaction from buyers at; he Addington market yesterday. All classes of ewes and store i embs were easier on last week’s rates. However, in spite of the; lecline. there was a good de-, band for good sheep. This week’s jarding included leveral annual drafts of Rom-i )e>s from Banks Peninsula,; frhich met a ready demand. The store sheep yarding was 14.645. compared with 36.385 last Keek. It consisted of 3115 ewe ambs. 3450 wether lambs. 97151 rvo-tooth ewes, and 18,330 adult I liieep. Store lambs Store lambs had an easier sale, m spite of a much reduced yarding. This was undoubtedly a reiction to the easier market in; the United Kingdom, and the

uncertainty' affecting the sale of the stocks already neld there. Compared with last week, most wether lambs were up to 50c a head easier. However, the quality .of the wether lamb yarding was not as good as in recent weeks. Corriedales and halfbreds of very; average size made up the bulk of the entry, and there was again a fair selection of Perendales. . Most store lambs sold in the j«10 to $ll range, with a few pens of lambs in forward killable condition to 513.70. Small lambs changed hands at $8 to $9.50. Ewe lambs continued to sell well, although the general mari ket did not reach the heights of j some recent sales. There were two notable exceptions on the day—the top pen of an annual line of Corriedales fetched SlB.lO, and a pen of well grown shorn Corriedale lambs made $lB. Compared with many of the twotoot hs which were selling at $16.50 to 517.50, they looked fairly dear buying.

Small to medium fine woolled: ewe lambs sold at about $10.50 to SI 1.50. Coopworth and Border cross ewe lambs again sold well, although at some recent sales they would no doubt have made up to S2 more. Where they were quite well grown and reasonably even in the wool, prices ranged from $15.50 to §18.50. Sales of store lambs included: Wethers. —Grasmere Station (Cassi, 321 Corriedale and Border Corriedale, at $8.40 to $12.75; C. G King (Conway Flat). 65 Per-, endales al $10.30 to $11.20; Knight’s Estate (Laverick’s Bay), 240 shorn Coopworths at $lO to $11; E. P. Vaughan (Coalgate), 121 Romney Cross at $11.30 to $l2: D. Handyside iHundalee), 251 shorn Romneys at $9.20 to $11; Benmore Graziers (Springfield), 86 Corriedales at $ll. Ewe lambs.—Langminna Holdings (Rakaia Gorge), 561 Coopworth and Coopworth cross at $9.90 to $15.70; Grasmere Station (Cass), 281 Corriedale and Border-Corriedales at $8.30 to $l4; Lands and Survey Department (Bell Hill. Ruru Block), 200 Perendales at $9.80 to $11.40; Miss M. Witbrock (Amberley), 393 CorI riedales at $16.80 to $18.10; Scarigill Hills (Scargill). 135 BorderCorriedales at $17.60; D. J. Potts (Greenpark) 351 Coopworths at 'sll to $18.50; L. H. and C. R. i Johnson (Dunsandal), 99 Border Cross at $15.70 to $17.40; Oakleigh. Southbridge (Southbridge) 475 Corriedales at $13.60 to $17.80. Two-tooth ewes i Corriedale and halfbred twotooth ewes had an easier sale for much of the day. but the i small selection of Romneys were ! little short of last week’s rates. ! This week’s two-tooth yarding I of 9715 head was again large, i and although a good sized galI lery followed the sale from the outset, the market for the fine woolled ewes was noticeable easi ier. Tlie better quality pens I eased another $1 to $1.50 a head, |with medium and smaller sheep I as much as $2 back. During the first two hours of ; the sale, very few' of the twotoot hs reached $l9. Medium young ewes were selling steadily | at $16.50 to $17.50. i However, the sale took on a : better tone with the offering : later of some of the principal lines. A number of these sold in the $2O to $23 range, but I there were only odd sales to 1 $25 or better. 1 Romneys were practically in I line w’ith last week’s rates, with good average spring shorn ewes selling at $23 to $25. The open-headed breeds continued to sell well, although ; these, too, were easier on recent I rates. A number of pens of Perendales sold at $2O to $22 with small or plainer sheep al | $l6 to $17.50. ; Sales of two-tooth ewes inI eluded:— Scarborough Hill Farm (Scarborough!. 396 Perendale-cross at i $2l to $25.60; Tokanui Farm (Pu i rau). 186 Perendales at $19.26 'to $20.80: Burrows Brothers I (Culverdent. 90 Corriedales at | $20.60: McQueen’s Valley Farm I (Motukarara), 150 Romneys at • $l6 to $l9; estate A. Adult sheep

The good annua! lines of breeding ewes continued to meet a very sound demand, but the market for most ewes was easier.

The yarding included very few lines of fine-woolled tussock ewes, but there was a good selection of annual draft Romney ewes from Banks Peninsula. Compared with last sale, most ewes were up to $1.50 a head easier, with the plainer end of the yarding being much harder to sell.

A line of early-shorn four-year-old halfbreds from the Rakaia Gorge fetched top price of $lB.BO. and the best of the summershorn ewes of similar breeding reached $l6. Other soundmouthed Corriedales and halfbreds sold mainly at $l3 to $14.50. Good one to two-year ewes were selling steadily at $11.50 to $12.50, and aged or plainer ewes, at $9.50 to $ll. Romney ewes had a ready sale, with the market improving as it went along. Sales ranged mainly from $15.50 to $17.20. It w'as a good market on the day.. Early-shorn Perendale ewes, I many of them from the West Coast sold well, prices ranging from $15.70 to $18.20. Considering this is the biggest ! trading week in ewes in Can-* terbury during the autumn, the! market for good annual draft ewes must be rated as quite sound. Sales of adult ewes included:—. Maitland Partnership (Port. Levy), 197 annual draft Romneys I at $17.20; T. J. Palmer (Robin-1 hood Bay), 103 annual draft Rom-j neys at $14.10; A. A.
