Inter-island freight delay
Claims that containers took longer to go from Wellington to Christchurch than they took to be shipped from the United Kingdom were made yesterday by the director of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr 1. D. Howell). Mr Howell said manufacturers were increasingly concerned about the time _ it took to get to Christ- ■ church containers which j had been discharged at the ; Wellington container ter- I minal.
“It is taking them up to six weeks to get them 200 miles to Christchurch —longer than it took to ship them the 12.000 miles out from Europe,” he said. “Hold-ups at the Wellington terminal seem to be the main problem. I do not think the Railways are to blame,” he said.
“The delays highlight the need for Lyttelton’s terminal to be operational as soon as possible and the need for the shipping companies to use it,” he said. Wellington’s congestion came at a time when the economy was relatively quiet, he said. “One wonders what would happen in a boom period.”
