League sponsor
A former rugby league player in Canterbury, Mr Trevor Thiele, has arranged a $60,000 sponsorship to assist the Balmain club in Sydney to strengthen its ranks for the 1977 season.
Mr Thiele played for the old Prebbleton club in 1944 and 1945, alongside his brother-in-law, MiPat Smith, who went on to lead Prebbleton to a championship victory in 1947 and captain the Kiwis in 36 matches between 1947 and 1949. Now the managing director of Camper Ford, Mr Thiele has been a supporter of Balmain for quite a few years and the $60,000 given by his firm will bolster the grant of $160,000 from the Balmain Leagues Club. One of the first signings made after the announcement of the sponsorship was that of the British stand-off half, David Topliss.
