Borough to be busy
The Riccarton borough; faces one of the most pro I gressive years in its history according to the Mayor (Mr ; R. W. J. Harrington) speak-, jng to a meeting of his coun cil last evening “We are going to see a lot of development.” he said. “I sincerely hope we will see the beginning of the new chopping complex next to the council chambers, and the beginning of a housing complex in Clarence Street. “I hope this will be in hand before the year is out. end to see the beginning of a new lot of pensioner housing — to keen up with the need. A very big development should take place on, the east side of Clarence Street before the end of the year.” Mr Harrington said he (oped the engineer (Mr W. F Leatham) and his staff would be able to meet “the ree-old problem” of keeping Ire roads in good condition. l>ut it would be a hard job
because of the shortage of; nonev and staff. Proposals from Mr M. J. Conway, a retired Conservator of Forests, were adopted for tree-planting, and $250 was put on next year's estimates. A registration fee of ss> and $lO for hydatids control was set for all dogs in the borough.
Cr D. A. Anderson said the higher fees would still mean a deficit of $lOOO in dog control costs, and Cr G. R. Marriner said there was a danger that rising fees would cause owners to “put dogs on the roads.” The effect might be to have fewer, better cared-for dogs, said Cr A. W. Taylor.
