Transplant boy makes progress
From JOHN ROSS. London Leslie Dewhurst was “eating like a horse, putting on weight, and making models,” said Dr Susan Fairhead at Hammersmith Hospital. London. The 11-year-old boy from Pukekohe continues to recover satisfactorily from a bone marrow transplant he underwent on January 15. she said.
Leslie’s blood count has. returned to normal, although it drops when he is given drugs to combat complications between the host and the graft marrows.
“This is where the danger lies.” said Dr Fairhead. “and it will he another two months before we can be sure major complications will not occur.”
Provided there were no setbacks, she said, it was possible Leslie could be out of hospital in less than two weeks.
His nine-year-old brother. Peter, whose bone marrow has saved Leslie’s life, visits him regularly with Mr and Mrs Tony Dewhurst and attends the hospital school.
Dr E. E. Gordon-Smith, who carried out the transplant and has been supervising Leslie’s recovery, savs he may be able to return to New Zealand about mid-Aprii.
